GENESIGHT TESTING

What Is GeneSight Testing?

Genesight is a genetic assessment that healthcare providers can order to tailor medication prescriptions to individual patients. Since genetics play a crucial role in how a person's body reacts to certain drugs, medications can have varying effects on different individuals. By collecting DNA through a straightforward cheek swab, Genesight examines a patient’s genetic information and offers personalized insights to aid providers in choosing medications that align with their patient's genetic profile. Numerous clinical studies have demonstrated that when clinicians utilize Genesight to inform their treatment choices, patients are twice as likely to have a positive response to the prescribed medication.

Why is genetic testing important for psychiatric purposes?

Your genetic makeup can influence how medications function in your body—some treatments may be more effective given your specific genetic characteristics, while others might not yield satisfactory results. Additionally, your genes can impact how efficiently your body processes (metabolizes) medications and delivers them into your bloodstream. When a medication is not compatible with your genetic profile, you may experience inadequate relief and potentially more side effects. Finding a medication that aligns with your genetics significantly increases the likelihood of receiving effective treatment. According to the findings from the Star-D Trial conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health, which involved over 4,000 participants, the probability of a positive response or remission from depression decreases by 25% for each unsuccessful trial of an antidepressant. This decline continues to accelerate with every additional medication attempted, meaning that each subsequent antidepressant you try may further diminish your chances of improvement.

Where do I do this and how long will it take to get the results?

The test involves a quick cheek swab conducted at our office or you can opt out to have the kit mailed to your home. After the sample is collected, it is promptly sent to the laboratory via express mail. Once the lab receives your sample, they will carry out the analysis and send a report to your healthcare provider within 72 hours.
